Following a review by the Post Office, the town centre branch will now become a Main post office thanks to a campaign by Grant Shapps.
Welwyn Garden City post office, operating from the Londis store on Howardsgate, provides customers with a wide range of services, including banking, mail and parcel services, and travel money. The business at the branch is growing and the postmaster has been asking for additional services for customers.
In September last year, Grant Shapps launched a campaign to demonstrate the demand for these services within the town. The campaign was supported by well over 1,000 Welwyn Garden City residents. He wrote to the post office to support the postmaster’s request for more services for residents, including passport renewals and driving licence applications, among a range of others.
He met with the postmaster Bankim and his business partner Sachin, with representatives of the Post Office to discuss the demand local people have demonstrated for these services.
At the meeting, the Post Office confirmed that they had reviewed customer usage at Welwyn Garden City post office. The branch data shows that the business has grown materially and is now the busiest branch in the town and meets the criteria to be reclassified as a Main branch.
Grant commented:
“Whilst this doesn’t mean an immediate expansion in services, it’s a step in the right direction, and one that myself and Bankim and Sachin who manage the post office, are very pleased about”.
Sachin and Bankim thanked Grant for all of his help in the matter:
“We are extremely thankful to Grant who was personally involved in this matter. We strongly believe that without his help, as well as the support and custom of the Welwyn Garden City community, this would not have been possible.”
Martin Edwards, Post Office Network Strategy & Delivery Director, said:
“It was great to meet Grant with Bankim and Sachin at Welwyn Garden City Post Office. The branch is very popular with customers and thanks to Bankim and Sachin’s hard work, business has been growing. The Welwyn Garden City branch is now the busiest in the town, and we will continue to review the services available to our customers at the branch.”
Discussions about adding new services to the branch are set to continue.
