Grant Shapps meets with the Sherrardswood School community to discuss their concerns about the A1000 past their school.
The speed limit and safety of the A1000 running between the A1M and the Bessemer Road roundabout has been of great concern to Sherrardswood School for a long time, and members of the school community are campaigning to improve the situation.
Grant met with Headteacher Mrs Wright, parents Mrs Coe and Mrs Barranes, pupils and other members of the school community to discuss their concerns about this stretch of road. Having walked down to the road with members of the school, Grant and Mrs Wright talked about the challenges that parents, pupils and staff face when getting to school, particularly when turning out of the school onto the 70mph road.
It also became clear how difficult and dangerous it is to walk and cycle to and from the school. The situation has become so bad that Sherrardswood is discouraging the school community from walking or cycling due to the risk the road presents.
Headteacher Mrs Wright thanked Grant and said the school community “were delighted that Grant took the time to visit Sherrardswood School, to highlight the ongoing issue of the dangerous school road, which sadly currently prohibits students from walking and cycling to school.
We are really hoping that the gathering momentum will encourage HCC to do the right thing and lower the speed limit from 70mph, as well as provide a crossing for this dangerous school road.”
Following the visit Grant commented that he was “glad to have had the opportunity to discuss the issues the A1000 presented to the Sherrardswood community. It is clear that the road is a real concern to staff, parents, and pupils alike and something needs to be done to improve the situation.”
Decisions about roads such as this should always be community-led. Therefore, Grant would like to know what the local community thinks about this issue and encourages everyone to get involved with his survey: https://www.grantshapps.com/A1000speedlimit
