Positive progress towards improving the Lagoon was made at a meeting chaired by Grant Shapps with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and Thames Water.
The Lagoon near Mundells in Welwyn Garden City is an outdoor space enjoyed by many local residents. However, in recent months the lagoon itself has become silted over, gives off unpleasant smells and has numerous items of litter floating in it. Furthermore, the area surrounding the lagoon is in need of a serious clear-up.
Following concerns raised by residents about the state of the lagoon, Grant organised and chaired a meeting with Ka Ng, Chief Executive of Welwyn Hatfield Council, and Jake Morley, Local Government Lead from Thames Water.
The discussion focused on the water quality and surface water network that feeds the lagoon as well as litter and the surrounding natural environment.
In response to pressure from Grant, Thames Water are looking into changing their maintenance schedule of the lagoon’s surface water network from annually to either half yearly or quarterly. Meanwhile, Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council will be looking into improving the condition of the land surrounding the lagoon.
Pleased with the result, Grant commented that he is “thrilled about the progress being made on cleaning up the lagoon and I hope it makes a real difference to people’s experiences of this outdoor space. I would like to thank the Borough Council and Thames Water for their efforts going forwards to improve the lagoon.”
Grant would be grateful if residents could complete his survey on the Lagoon. This will help him inform the Council and Thames Water about residents' view on the lagoon so that it is managed in the best interests of local people.
